This is what the Bible Society relief team is trying to give to thousands of Syrian refugee families who have desperately fled their hometowns, crossing the borders into Lebanon to find a safe place for their children. Despite their difficult and needy situations, many families are afraid to register their names with the United Nations Refugee agency for political reasons.
During the last visit paid by the relief team to a very crowded and poor known area in Beirut, they discovered that the refugee families are lodging with relatives in crowded apartments living in very difficult situations. Most of these families do not have steady incomes. The team was able to distribute relief packs with Arabic Scriptures to more than 200 families; at least 80 additional families showed up, who did not have their names registered.
Some families had their names on the waiting list and were more than grateful to receive this Scripture & Relief packages. One of the families visited by the team did not wish to be photographed, but they received the team in the 3 x 3 meters room where they are living. They talked about their demolished homes and towns with despair. They opened one of the relief boxes, and the mother said with tears in her eyes: “I heard about the Bible before, but I had never saw or carried one.” Her little three years old son took the Bible from the box and put it on his head in a sign of reverence to the Holy Book.
The need is tremendous, but hope is always available with the God of Hope. Our prayer is that this Book of Hope will comfort and encourage people of all walks in life.
