Graduating “Book of Life” cohort level 1 – Virgin Mary Brotherhood

On 8 December 2019, during the Sunday Service at St. John Parish in Achkout and in the presence of the parish priest Fr. Salim Sfeir, a group of 19 individuals received their certificates and gifts of graduation from the Bible Society program, “Book of Life” level 1.

The Virgin Mary Brotherhood at St. John adopted the Bible Society “Book of Life” program at the beginning of the year. Thirty-five committed volunteers attended the Bible study, held at the parish twice per month. The ones who graduated were those who completed more than 75% of the total courses offered.

The sessions offered included how to read the Bible in a scientific and objective way and focused on the most prominent passages of the Old Testament such as Genesis, Exodus, Joshua, first and second Samuel, Isaiah, Jonah, Job, and Proverbs… The attendees showed high interest in the topics discussed, especially the Old Testament as such passages were unknown to them and considered to present God that contradicts what they knew in Jesus Christ.

The Programs Coordinator at Bible Society, Deacon Joe Eid, expressed his joy over the “’new church missionaries; who have decided to go against all odds and difficulties that the country is going through, to go back to the word of God and be witnesses of it.”
Fr. Sfeir also expressed a word to the Bible Society for this course, which will have a positive impact on the parish and its mission work.

The leader of the Virgin Mary Brotherhood also said a word of thanks to the parish and to Bible Society and announced that those who graduated this year will move on to attend the second level of the “Book of Life” course.

The service was followed by a small reception at the church salon.

The Bible Society’s vision is to holistically meet the needs of communities through the transforming Word of God. As a Christian inter-confessional, ecumenical, non-profit organization, it works to spread the Holy Bible’s message and culture to all generations through translating, publishing, and distributing the Scriptures using visual, audio-visual, readable, and digital formats, encouraging people to read and engage with God’s Word, advocating the Bible cause to uphold human dignity, and partnering with all Churches and Christian institutions.
