The Third Academic Study Day on Infertility and Fertility

The issues of fertility and emerging human life are central to many ethical dilemmas discussed today across various fields, including science, society, law, politics, and economics, as well as within different philosophical and anthropological perspectives.

For this reason, the “Janiin” Association held the third study session on fertility and emerging human life under the title: “The Identity, Dignity, and Rights of the Embryo”, in partnership with the Higher Institute of Religious Studies at Saint Joseph University – Beirut and the Bible Society, on Saturday, March 15, 2025, at Saint Joseph University – Beirut.

The conference began with opening speeches by Sister Professor Yara Matta, Director of the Higher Institute of Religious Studies at Saint Joseph University, Dr. Mike Bassous, Secretary General of the Bible Society, and Bishop Jean-Paul Najem, supervisor of the “Janiin” Association for Accompanying Challenged Fertility.

The event featured scientific, philosophical, biblical, and ethical approaches to scriptural texts, presented by speakers Dr. Habib Atallah, Professor Joseph Maalouf, Father Dr. Bassam Nassif, Father Professor Edgard El Haybe, and Reverend Dr. Hadi Ghantous. Additionally, Bishop Dr. Milad Jaouich joined remotely from Canada.

The invitation was open to anyone seeking to delve deeper into issues of fertility and reproductive challenges, whether from a personal, research, or professional perspective.

The conference was distinguished by a diverse attendance of more than 100 participants, both in person at Saint Joseph University – Beirut and remotely via Zoom, providing a broader opportunity for discussion and exchange of ideas. The sessions were marked by dynamic dialogue, as participants engaged in working groups discussing how to understand the “truth” of emerging human life in light of reason and faith, sharing their experiences, questions, and personal suggestions.

Additionally, copies of the book “Proceedings of the Study Days on Fertility and Emerging Human Life in Sacred Texts and Religious Traditions – Volume One,” held in 2024, as well as “The Family Bible,” were distributed free of charge.

The event also included a fellowship meal fostering a spirit of sharing and connection, allowing participants to get to know one another in an atmosphere of warmth and solidarity.

Gratitude goes first to God, and then to all those who contributed to the success of this gathering, including speakers, organizers, and participants, with the hope that these efforts will continue to strengthen academic research, enhance spiritual and social awareness, and support the journey of human accompaniment.

The Bible Society’s mission is to spread the Holy Bible’s message and culture to all generations through translating, publishing, and distributing the Scriptures using visual, audio-visual, readable, and digital formats, encouraging people to read and engage with God’s word, advocating the Bible cause to uphold human dignity, and partnering with all Churches and Christian institutions.
